SiD and SiD extra events
- What will happen on the social action days?
The social action teams will be going out to serve the community. The days will start with registration from 9am. We’ll gather together at 9.45am for coffee, briefing and prayer, and you’ll be told which team you will be in and what tasks your team will be doing that session. After this teams will go out to serve the community, taking packed lunches with them and then returning to the Baptist Church at 5pm for tea and cake and a time of worship together.
- Will there be a social action activity suitable for me to take part in?
There will be different activities going on such as litter picking, gardening (such as tidying up communal areas or clearing residential gardens for those in need), visiting people in sheltered accommodation, prayer, catering for the teams… however you would like to bless Didcot. The more willing you are to get involved in a range of activities, the more likely we are to be able to give you something suitable.
- What would I need to bring?
Suitable footwear and clothing, a SiD t-shirt if you have one. A water bottle. Sun screen. Gardening gloves. Any gardening tools if you are willing to bring them (please label them). Leave any valuables at home. Black bags and litter pickers will be provided
- I am not available for the whole day, can I still be involved?
You can join a team for just a morning or afternoon.
- What if I won’t know anyone?
Teams will be made of people from across Didcot, so you’re sure to make friends as you work together. If you want to be in the same team as particular people, let us know on your volunteer form and we’ll do our best to accommodate this (up to a maximum of 4 people).
- What age do I need to be to be part of SID?
People of any age can get involved. We’ll try to find social action activities which would be suitable for those who are younger. If you are under 18 years old, you’ll need to name a responsible adult who will be in your team. Teams which include children or youth (under 18 year olds) will be led by at least one person with a current DBS check.
- Will it cost anything to take part?
No! The only requirement to getting involved is to give your time and talents. Soul in Didcot has been funded by gifts and fundraising by the various churches in Churches Together in Didcot and District, as well as grant awards in the past (see our sponsors page for more info on sponsors in 2014).
- Are SiD t-shirts available for the volunteers?
An order has been placed for t-shirts, which will be the same as the SiD 2014/16 t-shirts. Donations to cover the £12 cost (£10 kids sizes) of these will be gratefully received with your volunteer form.
- What about lunch?
Packed lunches can be ordered on your volunteer form, up to a few days before. If you haven’t ordered one, you’ll have to bring your own!
- I can’t be there but I would like to help out before… how can I get involved?
We’d love to have your prayer support – see the prayer points here, and use them to pray individually or organize a group to pray. Please also spread the word in your church so that no one misses out on serving our community!
Pop-up SiD (morning or afternoon events)
- What will happen at the pop-up SiD?
Volunteers will meet ready to go straight out to serve the community by litter picking or cutting back overgrown areas of Didcot. We’ll send out details of where to meet nearer the time.
- What will I need to bring?
Black bags and litter pickers will be provided. You’ll need to come prepared with a bottle of water, suitable gloves, secateurs if you have any, and your SiD t-shirt if you have one. Wear sensible clothing and footwear for gardening and for weather! Don’t forget sun screen. Leave any valuables at home.
- What if I won’t know any one?
Teams will be organised on an ad hoc basis as people arrive. If you come on your own we’ll add you to a team. Teams will be made up of people from across Didcot, so you’re sure to make friends as you work together.
